Top 10 Rewiring Tips

1

Know what you need

Remember, some houses may not need to be fully rewired. If you have recently had an extension or refurbished kitchen then the wiring might not need replacing. However most properties that haven’t had any wiring done in recent years will need a complete rewire.

3

Think about future proofing

If you are having your home rewired then you should future proof you're home and think carefully on how your requirements might change in the future. As we rely on technology more our electrical requirements will need to cope with the modern standards of living. Don’t forget to consider cat 6 points for faster internet. Whilst many people rely on wireless internet, a wired connection is generally faster and more reliable.

5

Avoid additions mid way through

Changes mid way through a rewire can slow progress and change the costs. Be sure to have a clear plan before rewiring starts so we know the location of each electrical point. We can arrange a meeting on site before rewiring commenced to run through the plan.

7

Decide on flooring

If you're planning to have new carpets installed then it would be best to remove the old carpets before rewiring starts. Cables are run under floors, through walls and across ceilings, so first fix is best done without carpets or furniture, so floorboards can be lifted and ceilings cut into.

9

Move out

Our electricians work a lot faster in empty houses. The power will be shut off when our electricians are working and lot a dust will be produced from chasing the walls. All in all, it will be difficult to continue your daily routine, therefore, if you can vacate the property until completion, it may be less stressful for you to do so.

2

Plan carefully before rewiring

It's important to plan your rewire before work starts. You will need to think about socket locations, light switch locations and the number of points. An electrical plan or drawing will help to avoid any confusion.

4

Get creative

Its your chance to consider any electrical alterations or additions like CCTV, home entertainment, smart technology, smart heating controls and LED lighting.

6

Ask for advice

Discussing all the needs and requirements of your rewire with us is important. We rewired a lot of home and may have options or alternatives that you didn’t even think of, both in terms of the actual plan and of products needed.

8

Prepare your home for rewiring

The bad news is that rewiring a house is quite a disruptive job however there are little things you can do to prep. You can start by removing everything you can, such as small furniture, décor items, area rugs, etc. We will always use dusts sheets and floor protection but we encourage clients to sheet up any furniture prior to our arrival to help minimise the dust.
